BESPOKE TALK Series: Principles of flow and fold in Architecture

Updated: Nov 17, 2022

In architecture, the importance of analysis of curvilinear lines, process of understanding modulation, and understanding of planar junctions & connections cannot be underestimated. Each of these concepts is essential in order to create successful, functional, and aesthetically pleasing structures.

Curvilinear lines add interest and movement to a composition and can be used to create a variety of effects. Proper understanding of how to use them is crucial in order to avoid creating a design that looks cluttered or chaotic.

Modulation is the process of creating variation in a design and is a key element in making a composition interesting and visually appealing. Without modulation, a design can appear flat and uninteresting.

Planar junctions & connections are necessary in order to create a structurally sound building. Without a solid understanding of how to create these, an architect runs the risk of creating a building that could potentially collapse.

Importance of Flow and Fold

In design, the term "flow" refers to the overall movement or path that the eye takes while viewing a composition. This can be thought of as the "journey" that the eye takes through a piece. Flow is created by using various design elements such as color, shape, and line to lead the eye from one area to the next. One of the best ways to understand FLOW is to think of it in terms of modulation. Modulation is the process of making gradual changes to a design element. For example, a designer might use a series of curvilinear lines to gradually lead the eye from one color to another. By making small, subtle changes, the designer can control the flow of the eye and create a more dynamic composition.

FOLD is an interdisciplinary design firm that focuses on the understanding of planar junctions and connections. Their work explores the potential of folding as a design method and material application. The firm has completed numerous international projects, ranging from small-scale installations to large-scale urban planning.

One of the main goals of FOLD is to explore the potential of folding as a design method. Folding is a way of creating three-dimensional forms from two-dimensional sheets of material. It is a versatile method that can be used for a variety of purposes, including shaping, supports, and skin.

In conclusion, Architecture relies heavily on the examination of curvilinear lines, the process of understanding modulation, and the comprehension of planar junctions and linkages.

Successful architectural design requires a grasp of planar junctions and connections. Having a firm grasp on how these factors interact with one another is crucial for producing a design that is both functional and aesthetically beautiful.
